Permits, Licenses & Renewals Practical guide

Build a Business License Inventory Before a Renewal Is Missed

Create a source-of-truth register for every license

The short answer

A useful inventory records the issuing authority, legal business name, covered activity, premises, license number, issue and expiry dates, renewal method, and the person responsible. Keep a copy of the issuing notice beside the entry so a later reviewer can confirm where each date came from.

How to approach it

Start with official state and local agency records, then compare them with your leases, business activities, and current operating locations. Do not assume a license in one city follows the business when it moves or expands.

  1. List active business activities and every operating address
  2. Match each activity and address to the relevant issuing-agency record
  3. Assign an owner and backup for renewal follow-up

Could this affect your business?

  • Could a teammate find the current original and its history without relying on one person's inbox?
  • Are the person responsible and backup owner clear for this record?
  • Have you checked the issuer's current rules for this exact location and activity?

Where BizScoper fits

Keep the source record close to the decision

Permit Watchdog is being developed to organize credential records and make renewal dates easier to review. It cannot determine which permits apply to a business or guarantee compliance.
